ANTELOPE ISLAND ANIMALS


Antelope Island is a superb ecosystem for the supporting of wildlife. Originally named for its herd of antelope, there are about 70 that roam the island today. The island is most famous for its large bison herd which ranges between 600 and 700.

Other predominant animals include mule deer, ranging between 200 and 250 head, coyotes, jack rabbits, cottontail rabbits badgers, bobcats, kangaroo rats, mice, and porcupines. There are also about 80 California big horn sheep which were introduced to the island in 1997.

Several species of owls call the island home, including the burrowing owl, the great-horned owl, the barn owl, and the short-eared owl. Other birds that inhabit Antelope Island include peregrine falcons, eagles, and chukar partridges. Lizards and snakes are also very common to see during a visit to the island. Fortunately, none of which are poisonous.
